Which Big Green Egg is the one for you?
Here is a full list of all Big Green Egg models and accessories, especially for you.
Buying a Big Green Egg can sometimes raise a few questions. Which Big Green Egg is the one for me? What are the sizes, the width of the grill surface, what are the dimensions of the Big Green Egg and which one should I choose? Maybe your preference is leaning towards a portable EGG, but will it have a large enough cooking area? Or do you often cook at home, for family and friends and are you having a hard time deciding between the Large or XLarge? Check the ins and outs of our models, as well as the accompanying accessories to expand your cooking options, to decide which Big Green Egg suits you best.
Which Big Green Egg will you choose?
A Big Green Egg has been on your wish list for a while now. Maybe you tasted a meal prepared on the kamado when you were at a friend’s house, or you read about it and it piqued you interest as a cooking enthusiast. You did your research about the quality of the Big Green Egg, and you are now sure that this is the kamado for you. Then the next question is: which Big Green Egg suits you best? We would love to help you with this, by telling you all about our entire family. From the dimensions of the seven Big Green Egg models, the pros and possible cons of these sizes, the specific features of each model to the amount of ingredients that can be cooked on them.
Big Green Egg Mini
Is your outside space limited and/or are you planning to transport your Big Green Egg on a regular basis? The Mini is a lightweight kamado, which you can place on a table and can be used to prepare simple meals for 2 to 4 persons. You can easily take the Mini with you, to the campsite, on the boat, on a holiday or when you go to have a picnic. With this model, you can truly cook on your Big Green Egg anywhere, anytime. Would you like to make it even easier on yourself? Simply place the Mini into the special EGG Carrier. This way, your EGG is firmly anchored and thanks to the handles, you can easily carry and move your EGG. Please note that the Cast Iron Grid and the Baking Stone are not available for the Mini. This means that your options are a bit more limited than with the MiniMax, which is also portable.
These ingredients fit on the grid of the Mini:
Direct method without convEGGtor
4 hamburgers, 1 Ribeye steak or 2 peppers
Indirect method with convEGGtor
1/3 side of salmon
Specifications:
- Grid: Ø 25 cm
- Cooking area: 507 cm²
- Weight: 17 kg
- Height: 43 cm
Big Green Egg MiniMax
Small but perfectly formed! There is no better description for the MiniMax. This model brings together the pros of the Mini with those of the bigger models. This small powerhouse can still be classified as a portable kamado and is designed to create simple meals for 4 to 6 persons at home or on the go. With the EGG Carrier provided, you can easily take the MiniMax wherever you go. Once at the location (or just at home) you can choose to place the MiniMax into the collapsible Portable Nest to cook at a comfortable height. The basic accessories such as the convEGGtor, Baking Stone, Cast Iron Grid and Cast Iron Skillet Small are all available for the MiniMax. This makes this portable model suitable for almost all conceivable cooking techniques for which the Big Green Egg is known. Because of the dimensions of this Big Green EGG, a standard springform tin also fits onto the grid. Absolutely perfect for baking that delicious apple pie! However, the grid of the MiniMax is situated less deep in the EGG than it is the Small model. As a result, cooking a Beer Can Chicken could be a challenge.
These ingredients fit on the grid of the MiniMax:
Direct method without convEGGtor
5 hamburgers, 2 Ribeye steaks or 3 peppers
Indirect method with convEGGtor
½ side of salmon, 1 pork neck or 1 chicken (flat on the grid)
Specifications:
- Grid: Ø 33 cm
- Cooking area: 855 cm²
- Weight: 35 kg
- Height: 50 cm
Big Green Egg Small
The Small and the MiniMax are often compared to each other, because the cooking area of these two models is exactly the same. Using this model, you can also cook simple meals for 4 to 6 persons and you can purchase the same handy accessories for it. Thanks to the small dimensions, both are favourites for the balcony, rooftop terrace or the patio. However, there are a few differences. The Small might only be a kilogram heavier, but it does take up more space, because the shape is more similar to the bigger Big Green Egg models. If you are planning to move you EGG on a regular basis, it would be best to place the Small in a Nest, which is equipped with castors. This model is, next to the MiniMax, also a favourite for those people looking to buy a second Big Green Egg or who would like to put an extra kamado at their holiday home, for example. Because even though the dimensions of this Big Green Egg aren’t massive, it does deliver huge results!
These ingredients fit on the grid of the Small:
Direct method without convEGGtor
5 hamburgers, 2 Ribeye steaks or 3 peppers
Indirect method with convEGGtor
½ side of salmon, 1 pork neck or 1 chicken (In the upright position on the Ceramic Poultry Roaster or the Vertical Poultry Roaster)
Specifications:
- Grid: Ø 33 cm
- Cooking area: 855 cm²
- Weight: 36 kg
- Height: 61 cm
Big Green Egg Medium
If you have a big family, regularly entertain dinner guests, or always serve something delicious from your Big Green Egg at parties, the Medium might just be your new best friend! This model is very versatile and fits in various types of wheeled stands. The Medium can easily handle a meal for a group of 6 to 8 persons. Starting from this model, the Big Green Egg is available in an intEGGrated Nest+Handler, an improved and sturdy stand, with a handle to easily move it. In addition, starting from the Big Green Egg Medium, it is also possible to place the EGG in an EGG Frame, so you can create your own outdoor kitchen with the Modular EGG Workspace. The supply of accessories is also a little more broad with the Medium. For example, the Cast Iron Dutch Oven will fit on the grid of the Medium, which allows you to create delicious soups or stews on your Big Green Egg. In addition, starting from the Medium model, there is also a convEGGtor Basket available. This allows you to place the convEGGtor easily and with only one action into your EGG, and you can take it out again just as easily. Because you are able to place a Half convEGGtor Stone in the lower level of the basket, the Medium allows you to create both a direct and an indirect zone and combine these two cooking techniques. There are many, but not all, accessories available for this model. This could be a reason to choose a Big Green Egg Large rather than the Medium.
These ingredients fit on the grid of the Medium:
Direct method without convEGGtor
7 hamburgers, 4 Ribeye steaks or 5 peppers
Indirect method with convEGGtor
¾ side of salmon, 2 pork necks, 1 chicken (In the upright position on the Ceramic Poultry Roaster or the Vertical Poultry Roaster ) or 3 spare ribs (flat on the grid)
Specifications:
- Grid: Ø 40 cm
- Cooking area: 1.140 cm²
- Weight: 51 kg
- Height: 72 cm
Big Green Egg Large
Of all the various sizes of the Big Green Egg, the Large is by far the most popular one. The reason is simple. You can cook meals for quite a big group on it, for example, 10 persons, and every conceivable cooking technique is possible with the Large. You can keep expanding this EGG, because all accessories are available for this model. The 5-Piece EGGspander Kit, available for the Large and XLarge, is a valuable addition to this kamado. Thanks to the 2-Piece Multi Level Rack, you can not only expand your capacity considerably, but also grill cowboy style, for example. The convEGGtor Basket, part of the kit, allows you to place the convEGGtor and also the Carbon Steel Wok. In addition to this, with the help of half accessories, you can also easily create a direct and an indirect zone to combine these cooking techniques. The more expansive stands such as the Acacia Table and the Modular EGG Workspace are also a perfect match for your Large. The possibilities are endless!
These ingredients fit on the grid of the Large:
Direct method without convEGGtor
10 hamburgers, 6 Ribeye steaks, or 7 peppers
Indirect method with convEGGtor
2 sides of salmon (1 side in the middle of the grid and 1 half on either side), 3 pork necks, 2 chickens (In the upright position on the Ceramic Poultry Roaster or the Vertical Poultry Roaster) or 6 spare ribs (in the Ribs and Roasting Rack)
Specifications:
- Grid: Ø 46 cm
- Cooking area: 1,688 cm²
- Weight: 73 kg
- Height: 84 cm
Big Green Egg XLarge
The XLarge is both literally and figuratively on a grand scale, with the same endless possibilities as the Big Green Egg Large. And you also have a broad range of choices in terms of stands and tables for the XLarge. At first glance, this model does not seem to differ much from the Large, but if you think it’s important to have huge cooking capacity, then the XLarge is a big step in the right direction. The cooking area of the grid is significantly bigger than the Large and cooking for a group of 16+ persons is not a problem for the XLarge. This is the reason that this model is very popular with professionals. The 5-Piece EGGspander Kit is also available for this EGG, which offers the same benefits as the Large. The only difference is that there is no Cast Iron Grid available for this model, due to the weight. If you do want grill on cast iron, you can use 1 or 2 Half Cast Iron Grid(s) which can be placed on the convEGGtor Basket. The only accessory that is not available for the XLarge is the Cast Iron Satay Grill. You can take this into account when considering which Big Green Egg you want to buy.
These ingredients fit on the grid of the XLarge:
Direct method without convEGGtor
16 hamburgers, 9 Ribeye steaks or 14 peppers
Indirect method with convEGGtor
2 sides of salmon, 5 pork necks, 4 chickens (In the upright position on the Ceramic Poultry Roaster or the Vertical Poultry Roaster) or 8 spare ribs (6 in the Ribs and Roasting Rack and 2 upright against the sides of the rack.)
Specifications:
- Grid: Ø 61 cm
- Cooking area: 2,919 cm²
- Weight: 99 kg
- Height: 78 cm
Big Green Egg 2XL
Large, larger, largest. The Big Green Egg 2XL is the biggest member of the Big Green Egg family and the largest kamado available on the market! It is a real eye catcher and therefore, the 2XL is mostly popular with chefs in big kitchens or for use during events. It is the perfect kamado to prepare large quantities at once, or with the help of the convEGGtor Basket and 2x a Half convEGGtor Stone, to slow cook big chunks of meat. This allows you to provide large groups with delicious meals or snacks all at once, from the Big Green Egg. However, you can, of course, use this gigantic EGG for all the other cooking techniques that you would expect from a Big Green Egg. Naturally, you can use the basket and a half stone to create a direct and an indirect zone on this model, allowing you to combine these cooking techniques. However, there is no Cast Iron Grid available for the XLarge. In the garden, the choice is often to place the 2XL in an EGG Frame or to build a table onto a Table Nest. The pros who take their 2XL to catering jobs, usually go for the IntEGGrated Nest+Handler, which allows you to easily move the EGG. This model includes a special hinge system that allows you to easily open the heavy lid. The weight certainly does not have to be a reason to avoid this model.
These ingredients fit on the grid of the 2XL:
Direct method without convEGGtor
20 hamburgers, 12 Ribeye steaks or 22 peppers
Indirect method with 2x Half convEGGtor Stone
4 sides of salmon, 7 pork necks, 5 chickens (In the upright position on the Ceramic Poultry Roaster or the Vertical Poultry Roaster ) or 8 spare ribs (6 in the Ribs and Roasting Rack and 2 upright against the sides of the rack.)
Specifications:
- Grid: Ø 73 cm
- Cooking area: 4,185 cm²
- Weight: 170 kg
- Height: 90 cm
